The Preliminary Exam will be held in two shifts each exam day: Shift 1 reporting 8:00–9:00 AM, exam 10:00 AM–12:00 PM; Shift 2 reporting 1:00–2:00 PM, exam 3:00–5:00 PM. Each shift carries 100 marks with a duration of 2 hours.

Reservation under each post follows the Madhya Pradesh Public Service (Reservation for SC, ST and OBC) Act, 1994, with vertical categories (UR/OBC/SC/ST/EWS) further split into horizontal categories – Women (35%), Ex-servicemen (10%) and serving Police personnel with at least 6 years’ clean service (15%). Sub Inspector (SAF) posts are open to male candidates only. Candidates who are not original residents of Madhya Pradesh may apply only against unreserved/open vacancies and are not entitled to any reservation or age relaxation; their age must not exceed 33 years as on the last date of application.

Only one applicable relaxation basis will be granted where a candidate qualifies under more than one head. Candidates with more than two living children, where one child was born on or after 26 January 2001, are not eligible, except where a single surviving child is followed by a multiple birth in a later delivery.
Educational Qualification
- Subedar / Sub Inspector (SAF) / Sub Inspector (District Police Force): Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university, or equivalent.
- Sub Inspector (Arms): 3-year diploma in Mechanical Engineering from a recognised technical university.
- Sub Inspector (Photo / Questioned Documents / Finger Print): Bachelor’s degree with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry from a government-recognised university, or equivalent.
Physical Standards
- Height: Male – 167.5 cm or above; Female – 152.4 cm or above.
- Chest (male candidates only): Minimum 81 cm unexpanded and 86 cm expanded, with at least 5 cm of expansion; no relaxation permitted.
- Eyesight: Vision not less than 6/9 in one eye and 6/12 in the other without glasses, with normal colour vision (tested via Ishihara plates).
- No knock-knee, flat feet, or any form of physical disability is permitted for these posts.
Selection Process
Stage 1 – Preliminary Written Exam (objective, common for all posts, no negative marking; result used only to shortlist for Stage 2 and does not count towards final merit)
Stage 2 – Main Exam, Physical Efficiency Test & Interview
- Main written exam (two General Studies papers of 300 marks each for all posts; an additional technical paper of 300 marks for technical post candidates).
- Physical Efficiency Test – 800m Run, Long Jump and Shot Put.
- Document verification of all original certificates.
- Personal Interview for candidates who clear the Physical Efficiency Test and document verification.
For each post category, roughly 10 times the advertised vacancies are shortlisted from the Preliminary Exam for the Main Exam, and roughly 3 times the advertised vacancies are shortlisted from the Main Exam for the Physical Efficiency Test and Interview stage.

Minimum qualifying marks in the Physical Efficiency Test: 30 marks for non-technical posts and 20 marks for technical posts. No exemption from the Physical Efficiency Test is given on medical or any other grounds, and the scheduled date cannot be changed for any candidate.
Interview: 50 marks, conducted only for candidates who clear the Physical Efficiency Test and whose documents are found in order.

Selected candidates will be placed on a 3-year probation, during which stipend will be paid at 70% of the minimum pay in the first year, 80% in the second year, and 90% in the third year, in addition to other allowances applicable from time to time. Candidates recruited on or after 1 January 2005 are covered under the Defined Contribution Pension Scheme.
